The Somali army killed at least four al-Shabab militants in fierce fighting in the country’s southern region on Sunday, the authority said Monday.
The battle erupted as the militants attempted to ambush a convoy of the Somali National Army (SNA) in Middle Shabelle region.
“We were traveling along the road between Jowhar and Bal’ad when the terrorists attacked us but our military forces fought back bravely killing four of them,” said Qasim Ahmed, a SNA commander without revealing the army’s causalities.
Ali Hasan, a local resident, said he heard heavy gunfire. “At first we thought it was a battle between tribal militias, but we learnt it was an ambush on military forces.”
