An Al-Shabaab convict who was condemned to face the firing squad last July was today handed a new lease of life by an appeals court in Puntland in a case that saw four other Al-Shabaab and Deash members get reduced jail terms.
A lower military court had on July 29, 2019 sentenced Ayub Nuur Nuuh to death but he later appealed the case. In its ruling today, the military appeals court handed Nuuh an almost free sentence-five years in jail.
The court also reduced sentences for three other defendants to 15 years but upheld the death sentence for Mohamed Hassan Baraka whom the court said was an IED expert for the militant group. He was captured in Almadow during a clash with Puntland forces.
Bishar Mohamed, a daesh member found guilty of killing a military commander and a regular soldier in Bosaso also had his death sentenced affirmed by the court.
Four others had their jail terms reduced to 15, five, three and two years.
