Somali President launches over one million books for primary schools

Somali President Mohamed Farmaajo Saturday unveiled over one million primary school books targeting 300,000 pupils countrywide.

The launch of the books which comprise 1 million students’ books and 102,000 teachers’ guide marks a major milestone as Somalia seeks to standardize its curriculum after close to 30 years when private entities run the education system in the absence of government.

Speaking during the launch in Mogadishu, Farmaajo said his administration was committed to ensuring all children access education.

“We want to make education affordable and even support the children who cannot afford,” Farmaajo said.

Noting that the government now runs 24 schools which were under the hand of private entities for many years, the Somali leader added the government will ensure all public schools under private hands will be repossessed by the government.

The books which are all written in Somali language except the language ones-English and Arabic will be now be distributed to teachers and schools. The government is yet to make public plans for incorporating schools under private entities.
