Authorities in the breakaway region of Somaliland have today suspended the importation and sale of khat in the region.
Speaking to the media in Hargeisa town, Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Abdillahi Sayli’i said the COVID19 response committee and khat traders had agreed to suspend importation of the leafy stimulant.
“Following days of talks with the traders, today we hereby announce that importation and selling of khat have been suspended,” he said.
Sayli’i said the suspension of khat will take effect on 26th of this month.
“The suspension will continue until 21st of May, of which the committee will reconsider the situation,” he said.
The announcement comes hours after Somaliland health Ministry confirmed thirteen more cases of covid19.
Somaliland traders import khat from the neighbouring Ethiopia via road.
